It's impossible to put on a SR20 HG wrong. You would realise before you get to the point of torqueing it down. If the HG was blown on the previous motor some times all of the coolant that got into the exhuast takes a while to burn off. First you have to figure out if it is oil or coolant. If the head was ported it's possible that it was ported to big and got into a oil or water passage. If everything in the block is done right you have to check these things. Let the car sit overnight then take out the plugs and look into the cylinders with a light. If the valve seals are leaking you should see oil on top of the pistons.

What tune? inj/maf combo? anything done to the head? did you rebuild just because, or bad headgasket prompted rebuild? valve seals, bad timing, tune, oil restrictor size, warped head, etc, come to mind for things to check.
