The GTIR's have weak cases that still allow gears to spread apart and break. The evo trans does not do that. 700awhp evos still using stock gears. Just dont wheel hop. Buddy did that in his, hit 2nd gear and wheel hopped and chipped a tooth on 2nd gear.

Also use a thicker gear oil if you wernt already. 85w140 Valvoline FTW

The evo 5spd is stronger than the 6spd. From what I remember the 6spd trans is almost the same size as the 5spd (case). That would mean the gears are smaller to fit into the same place. I always remember people killing the 6spd's and swapping to a built 5spd from Tre or shep.

This is not entirely true. Look at all the space in the 6 speed trans thats between some of the gears. There is plenty of room in the case.

Also the 1-3 on the 6 speed are way beefier than the 5 speed, However the 4th and 5th are not. They like the 6 speed over the 5 speed because of the gearing and 4.4 final drive. Very evenly spaced and short gearing. Shep has taken care of the issues with his 3-5 upgrade gears which are way beefier than the 5 speed and so on and have been tested on 600-700awhp drag and road race cars with great success. So I know if i break any of the gears on my 6 speed im going with the upgrade as its cheap and reliable. We are in the works of contacting Shep now to see if he wants to take a look at the spec V 6 speed trans to verify the gear stacks are the same and that the upgraded gears are interchangeable. Its in the how to thread for those interested.

When they rebuild the 5 speeds they don't change the gears. It would seem there is no need too. The 5 speed would be the easier and cheaper route to go because you wouldn't be limited to one company that could beef up the box for you. Then again this could be a pointless debate since I have never seen a EVO trans in a awd nissan before.

Oh they swap gears in the 5 speeds, they tend to go at anything over 500awhp as well so yeah.

Shouldnt be too hard of a swap if someone could make an adapter plate. Especially for someone using a twin disk, Make the adapter plate 1/2" thick, get the CC flywheel for the 6 speed swap and it should take up the extra distance that adapter plate takes up, Keep the starter in the normal sr20 location. Make some slight modifications for mounts and thats about it. The mount style is the same as the specV, p11,b15, p12 you would have to make slight changes for that extra 1/2" that it would be towards the drivers side. Custom rear mount and custom axles or evo axles if they will fit under there and if they are the same spline count as the hubs.

They still use factory gears for the 5speed. it's just ratio of the gears are different from year to year. The most important part of doing something like this is to see "if" the transfercase will even fit up right. The evo's transfercase is huge vs the GTiR if I remember the GTiR size right.

yeah its bigger but if you have the clearance for the awd system to begin with it should. Its a matter of if it will clear the block without much cutting or grinding if anything. That and you would probably need to use the evo rear diff unless the gtir rear diff is the same ratio. But cant mix your front FD ratio and rear gear ratio or you will wear out all the LSD's
