Good Thread. I have two studs broken off in my head. Good luck I guess lol. It seems like yours is broken off in there as well. I'm not sure on this either. What would be the best type of extractor to use?

weird, with all the sr motors ive worked on ive had only one stud break off to the point where i would have had to drill the stud completely out and helicoil it. But that motor was an original motor with 165k on the clock and it ended up getting pulled out anyways. other than that ive done many many motors with the most happening is the stud coming out with the nut cuz the nut wouldnt come out. Other than that no issues at all.

I have had SOOOO many bad studs. My jdm sr had one bad stud my old azz usdm sr had 2 and my gtir had 2 also, so I am use to it and its a very easy fix and i don't see any need for helicoils?? Just retap it with a slightly larger size and you'll be good to go. Sometimes the same size will fit too.

I used this style of Craftsman extractor. They, so far, have succeeded twice, and failed once at extraction. Every other type of extractor I've tried has failed. I believe the extraction failures were never due to the extractor used, and were more due to the rust level or tightness of the bolt. However, I don't mess with success anymore and try to use these things when ever I can. Part of their greatness is that they use the power of a drill to do the work for you.

If you're lucky like me the stud just broke off, and wasn't over tightened or anything. In this case, it should be very easy to extract even with something like this. I know that once I extracted my stud, I looked in the hole and it looked like another piece was stuck in there. This was not the case, and you may be seeing the same thing I was. Check to make sure there's really something in there by removing another stud and sinking a long object down the hole and making note of how far it will go in, then check the suspect hole for comparable depth.

I'm really liking that manifold. If I go with a log, it will be this one over the cast iron.

MR-4Door-SR20DE, I assume the stud has come out of the block with the nut frozen onto it?

Put two nuts on the block end of the stud and lock them together. Use them and a wrench to hold the stud in place while you use another wrench on the frozen nut. Apply liquid wrench or what ever you've got and/or soak it in oil for a day or so if it's really stuck on there or you don't want to take any chances.

All else fails, just buy a new stud. No harm done.

^I have some good studs on my parts motor with the nuts off of all of them. I thought about using a couple of those since I have them handy. Like you said, I didn't want to take any chances on messing anything up.

Alex -

Pick up some reverse drill bits at Harbor Freight, and if you can't get it I'll help you this weekend.

As for exhaust studs, just buy a whole kit and replace them all. You really don't want another stud to snap while you're putting it together.

yep, the left handed drill bits is what we use in the shop if we need to get a bolt out. will drill a hole in it if you can't pull it and may just pull it out if you get lucky. its a win win.
