bes get a shift light lol then atleast you will know when your really at 8500+. my stock tach is off by almost 500 rpms at 9k. on the dyno the tach was pegged before we revd to 9.

Thats also another option. I noticed it was off since I put in my MSD box. I set it to 5,200 to activate and my tach would sometimes say its activating at 5200 and other times 56-5800, lol. I'll see if I can find one of the local Honda guys has something I can throw in before the weekend.
