Wire under Transmission
There is a wire loom that is plugged in to the bottom of my transmission that has been disconnected at the other end. It has 2 wires coming out of it. I cannot figure out where this wire loom is supposed to connect to from the transmission. Any ideas? I would post a pic but I seem unable to do that for some reason. Mine is a '93 SE-R with manual tranny.

There are actually two such wires under the tranny, one along the side near the wheel, the other in the rear near the shift linkage. One is for reverse, the other is for neutral. I'm assuming the unplugged one is neutral otherwise your reverse lights wouldn't work.

Both come up to attach to a harness above the transmission. Should be easy enough to find an empty connector that reaches in that area.

Thanks much. This one seems to be further back near the shift linkage. And the reverse lights do work when I put it in reverse. So if it is for Neutral what issues would it cause by not being wired up? Also, would it cause my Cruise Control not to engage?

Possible, the ECU is not getting a signal from the trans.

Depending on the switch, the ECU will either think you're always in neutral (which would explain no cruise), or never in neutral. Sounds like the always neutral is what is being sensed right now.

Is that bad for the car in any other way besides the Cruise?

I checked the wiring schematics, the switch goes directly to the ECU. Some research found this thread: http://www.sr20-forum.com/general-sr20/16424-neutral-position-switch.html#post214949

This post summed up most of what you would see with this disconnected:

Some of the other stuff affects drive-ability under certain conditions, like fuel cut during deceleration with the throttle closed, and enrichment while idling/poking along in traffic. Putting the ECU in "ignition timing/idle speed adjustment" mode (warmed up with TPS disconnected) also depends on the neutral switch. There are also a number of diagnostics that are affected.

Sounds like something you'd rather have connected, but it's driveable without.

Neutral switch is also used for idle/evap on some type of ECUs. I am unsure about the stock ones, only familiar with Nismotronic.

Thanks so much for the help. Anyone have a pic of where it is supposed to hook up to or at least a description? The link provided above doesn't show the pics.

Get underneath the car, bring that cable straight up the back of the transmission, and see if you can get the connector to rest or hook on to something. Get up top, pull the cable a bit (not too hard) and just pull it to see how far it will go. That's your search radius. There is a wiring harness coming along the firewall that runs across the top of the transmission, and splits off. Somewhere in there, you will find the connector. Your air intake tubing may be in the way of a good visual, depending on your setup. Best bet is to shine a light around from various angles and see what you can see.

I will take a look tonight and see if I can get a pic if you still need it, but my harnesses have undergone some major work and don't necessarily represent any other existing vehicle. LOL
