Thread: Anyone had allot of trouble getting shifter shaft roll pins out?

Good lord. I have been beating on those things for an hour. Am I correct using 3/32" and 5/32" punches? (Same as shifter fork) Letting them soak in pb tonight hoping for better luck tomorrow...

Just to save any kind soul the trouble. Got it.

Are those the same sort of roll pins as shown in this thread? I haven't tackled one of those yet, and would love to know exactly how those things get removed.

Is it really just hitting them with a punch? I haven't had anything apart yet where those need to come out, but I can see that day approaching.

Sure is Jim. The clutch arm pins have always been easy for me, but the ones on my shifter shaft were a while different animal. I ended up breaking/bending 5 punches and tried drilling/dremeling with no luck (hardened pins). I am sure those had been in there a long time and were exposed to the elements, so they got pretty crudded up.

In the end I believe my success was in orienting the tranny so it was completely solid/braced and did not move at all when hammering the pin. I did this by placing the tranny on the bearing cover and using a floor jack to hold it upwrite. This allowed for me to hammer downward onto the pins and eventually they gave way one at a time. I also had to use a tapered punch to start the center pin since the straight shaft punches bent/broke under my 3lb sledge.

Long winded, but hope that might help you or anyone else in the future...let me know if that needs any clerification.

On a side note I hope this darn jgy lsd is worth all this trouble!!
