GA16de tranny rebuild help
Hey guys. I'm kind of a newb here but I know a little bit about cars including my 03 spec-v that I usually drive. I want to retire it as a dd and get the b13 e back on the road to save some gas money for the commute to work. It needs a lot of parts including apparently a transmission overhaul. When I used to drive it almost every gear would grind. While it was parked in my garage waiting on the funds for the other parts I need to get it back on the road, I got bored and dropped the tranny to open it up. Looking inside, I quickly realized this is beyond me. The most technical thing I've ever done was a hg swap on the spec so yeah...

Anyway, what I think is the reverse idler bearing, fell out somehow upon opening it up and showing it to my neighbor. I didn't notice any visible damage like I thought I would, the fluid level seemed kosher, but all the gears were grinding when I used to drive it. Maybe transmission linkage? It's only got about 30k miles on it.

So while it's laying open I'm thinking of rebuilding it with a kit from advanced auto parts. They sell the one with synchros for $351 but how can I tell if I need synchros? All the gears seem fine. Also, I can't really find a manual that gives me a good idea of what to do. Closest I could find was a b14 fsm. Using that I think I found out the gear that randomly fell out the tranny is a reverse idler gear. I guess there is more parts to it like a spacer or something... I mean, I really have no clue what's going on in there.

So seeing how clueless I am should I even attempt a rebuild? I think if I found a fsm specific to my tranny maybe I could do it. Or is the b14 tranny the same in m/t form?

What tools would I need and how much are they?

Are there links around here for info that could help me? I've searched around but haven't found a whole lot. It seems like most of the ga16 forums are either shut down or very old. I think I found more info here than anywhere else.

Help?

Ok so no help there. Let me be more specific. Where can I find the fsm for the b13 in PDF form? Where is a good forum for the ga16de?

unfortunately the ga16de forum went offline round abouts a month ago.

for $350 its the same cost to just replace the entire transmission... and if you are replacing the transmission you have the opportunity to get the nx1600 transmission which supposedly is a little quicker.

the fsm can be found right here on the dash in several places like here http://www.sr20-forum.com/sentra-se-r/45623-nissan-sentra-nx-coupe-b13-usdm-fsm-1993-a.html

not really surprised nobody replied since this is an sr forum, but there are far more ga's lurking around than most members care to admit.

yes, I am on a ga16de b13 no I didn't rebuild the transmission, I replaced! I learned a hard lesson lately... important things should be replaced with oem parts as aftermarket has poor quality control, materials, and workmanship.

Cool. I matched up a fsm for b13 with a b14 fsm and figured out they are the same tranny code. RS5F31A. With that in mind you can use this for the overhaul procedure. http://www.b15u.com/downloads/fsm_pdf/1994_Sentra/MT.pdf
In case that link doesn't work just go to b15u.com and search FSM.

I want to know where you got the tranny for 350 if you don't mind saying so please!

If you were closer; there are two NX1600 and a sentra transmission local all 5speed.

Picknpull sells transmissions for $130.
Also look at Car-part.com

The NX transmission is LSD and has shorter gears as it needed them to handle the extra weight/stress of the NX.

Main thing that interests me in the ga16de is fuel economy. This trim didn't come with p/s or a/c so when it ran I was getting 40 mpg. I may have to get the nx1600 tranny though if its easier to find. The RS5F31A seems to be pretty rare from what I can tell.

Don't put money into that trans. You can buy a used one for under 150$ and they are a dime a dozen.

If you say so. I'm having a hell of a time here in Houston finding any.

not all nx transmissions are lsd for ga16de. from what I understand, it was only a jdm model one that is rather rare to find. if you can show me proof that all nx transmissions for ga are lsd, I will pull one tomorrow. only realistic option is phantom grip... aka phantom slip (though not likely even a turbo ga can make one slip)

if your ga is running tip top, it should pull over 45mpg w/ a 5 speed on long trips.
