Ive seen reference to the 6 speed running the same gearset as a Evo8, has anyone proven they are identical??

I have a p12 20v box in my turbo car, its too low and i really would like something a bit longer to suit the torque of the turbo engine.

I dont think importing a box from USA to NewZealand is a option at this stage. There are places that bring oldschool muscle car parts in, and i could possibly get something put in a container, but its a lot of hassle to find a parts dealer keen to help out and transport etc.

I dont expect a Evo8 transmission or gearset to be cheap, but they are available locally, so is a option i might look at. Ideally it would be nice to be cruising at 100kph, 60mph, around 2000rpm instead of 3000rpm, and for longer spaced gears when accelerating.

Do you get Altima or Maxima 6 speeds there?

If you find a factory service manual for the Evo8/9 you should be able to tell from the diagrams and spec's shown in it.

Never realized, but these to trannies are 98% identical. I had heard Nissan made the 6 speed for the MR's, but had never seen any concrete evidence untile now.

Thanks,

The Toyota GTS celica also.
The Evo IX MR.

The Evo has opened up options for the aftermarket for us too. Since EVO guys are modding the MR, there are gears made from billet that swap right in to strengthen 3-5 gears.

Couple of quotes from the first page regarding the different cars this transmission is in

Yes the evo 8/9 MR 6 speed uses the same "style" gears. However the final drives are different...which means you would have to have the proper ring gear as well which is different on the evos and does not bolt up to the fwd diff. So your out of luck on that.

Your best bet is to get a maxima or spec V box, 04 or newer if you can.

Yeah the p12 box is too short for turbo. You definitely need the 04+

Shaved the small tabs off the inside of the bracket and she fits like a glove.

It still looks like it's pulling in though.

Here's the pass. side...

So far the only car ive found that is close is the Evo. We didnt get
anything else with the 6 speed, unless the mazda6 or Mazda MPS uses a similar gearset, both of these would be very hard to find tho.

Maxima only came in Auto and CVT here.

I think the only clear and simple, but expensive option, is getting a USDM Maxima 04+ gearset or gearbox.

In saying that, i have a spare 20v box and conversion kit, prob wouldnt be worth the freight to send to USA as a swap for a Maxima gearset tho.

The evo 6 speed is not "very weak". Its weaker than the 5 speed but its not weak by any means. Most evo guys dont usually start breaking 4th gear until about 500awhp. You have to take into account that a 3000+ lb evo and awd and street tires is going to put a crap ton more abuse on the trans than a fwd car will.

So yes to them the 6 speed is weaker but its not a weak trans when you look at it from all perspectives.

Yesterday...

Today...I'm not pleased.

It's still trying to pull the mount thru...with only a few decently hard pulls in two days! Nothing looks out of the ordinary underneath. Could this be a mazworx bracket issue? I haven't found any slack 'in the system' after I had the axle bracket welded.
