Emissions Test: Denied Hot Rod Status???
Hey guys,

So i just went through the circus that is the new E-testing standards.

My car is a 99 P11 G20 with a W10 Avenir SR20DET. Here's what the requirements state in order to qualify for Hot Rod Status:

"Definition of a hot rod
Under law, a hot rod is any car whose original motor has been replaced by a different type.

Type refers to the motor’s:

-manufacturer
-block size (displacement)
-use in the vehicle’s model and model year*

*Any motor that was available for that model and model year (for example, it may have come as an option) would not be a different type and, therefore, not qualify as a hot rod."

Taken from the Government of Ontario Website here :https://www.ontario.ca/driving-and-roads/do-hot-rods-need-drive-clean-test

Now under the last stipulation for type, my car qualifies, since it was not available with a SR20DET from the factory. but today, i received this response:

"Hello,

This email is in regards to the Hot Rod Application.

The Drive Clean Office has reviewed the application and has determined that the block size was originally offered for this vehicle. The vehicle would need to be tested to the original standard.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Drive Clean Contact Centre at 1-888-758-2999, you may wish to speak to one of our technical specialist's.

Regards,

Daniella
Customer Service Representative
Ontario Drive Clean Program"

I called the number to speak to a rep. when I explained my case to her, she referred me to a supervisor, who wanted to argue with me until I told him that by the drive clean office's standards, my car should qualify. I am waiting for a response back, but I'm getting worried, since he told me there is no appeal process for hot rod status.

Has anyone else run into this problem with their car? specifically people who swapped out a SR20DE for a DET?

Why are you trying to get hot rod status? Ontario does emissions testing now or have they always? All my friends are licensed mechanics in nova scotia so I have no problem getting MVI which you guys do not have I beleive? Dave

Hot rod status allows you to have your car emissions tested under a more lenient standard. it's the only way my car would be able to pass. I had it tested under hot rod status 2 years ago, but now they have changed the rules and you have to register the car as a hot rod with the ontario government before you can have it tested under hot rod standards.

I see. Well I'm of no real help then, lol. Good luck, hopefully you get it sorted out. Dave

buy SR16 block...
put internals of DET or whichever in it.
Re-apply for hot rod status

Profit?

The new Hot Rod status in Ontario is useless for 'newer' swaps. My car has been approved as a hot rod - GTi-R swap. However, it still has to pass emissions based upon the original engine. Hot Rod status is only beneficial on older cars. Unless they change, I don't know what I'll do next year when it comes to my next e-test.

Some good news! I just got a call back from the ministry of the environment... one of the auditors looked through my photos with me while i was on the phone with him, he wanted to see the turbo more clearly and when I pointed it out to him, he approved the car for hot rod status.

Now all i have to do is a 2 speed idle once i have my clearance number, and the parameters of the test should be relaxed compared to the standard 2 speed idle.

I'm not sure, because the auditor told me that my car will be tested under the relaxed standards. if you have problems, just call them and e mail them relentlessly. If you run into problems, let me know and I will forward you the contact info on the guy that reversed the decision on my car.

Curious. Because I also called everyone and the guy I spoke with over a year ago was supposed to be 'the guy'! I will call you for your guy's contact info for sure! I even sent them pictures verifying the block was from a GTi-R. Accepted everything I sent but then said it made no difference.
