SR20DET smog
Not wanting to sound like a complete newbie, which i think might be unavoidable, but is it legal to do a SR20DET swap for a car, specifically a 1997 nissan 200sx se-r, in SoCal? I know there are regulations, for example the engine has to be either the same year or newer than the chassis. My question is in regards to ECU, and visual inspection.
Thank you!

if the motor is from a newer car or same year and was available in a US market car then yes.

a factory sr20det will not pass a california visual inspection. and there is no way to make it pass. best way is to turbo the stock engine and modifiy the emissions components to work with the turbo manifold.

Have you known anyone who has done that so I could PM them and see what kind of work it was, difficulty wise

its very difficult because you have to reroute the EGR and AIR tubes and weld them into the downpipe. i dont know anyone that has done it. but it is possible in theory. basicly it comes down to it suck to live in california if you want to mod your car.
