Probably an impurity in the material caused an accelerated cyclical fatigue fracture. Sometimes things just happen like that, since it would be incredibly implausible to test each piece for imperfections under the surface.

Every company and product has a failure rate. Even it that failure rate is a minuscule percentage, as I would guess it is with a Hypercoil product.

Dudeman came up with a (engineer-sounding) plausible "quality control" issue above.

What I really want to know is how Hyperco is going to treat you. What they will do for you. What type of "warranty" is in place, or what their policies are to deal with this situation. How they will "make it right" for you as the consumer. Especially because we (little B13-Group Buys) are a very, very, small, microscopic, little blip on their radar screens. How are they gonna treat a "little guy" so to speak.

I would *highly suspect* (and expect and hope) they are going to make this right.

Was it heavily rusted? My own set the outer coating came off easy. Rust has developed. I haven't taken a close look to see how deep the rust has penetrated.

Same situation here... I think I´ll take the rust off and repaint them..

I have trouble believing rust to be the culprit. Wouldn't that be mere surface rust? Are you talking about rust actually pitting into the spring? Maybe up North with salted roads in the winter rust could do that much damage to a spring? I'm asking/speculating.

My OEM springs lasted fourteen (14) years, scuffed and rusty, and never failed. In Texas, no serious rust to speak of except in the coastal areas. When my Classic was restored, there were spots on the body that had minor surface rust. Some small spots that had been scraped and subsequently rusted for over a decade (a nasty ding/scratch on my drivers side rear quarter panel) and it was still just surface rust.

He cannot have had the Hyperco springs for more than...what....six or seven years? Mine have been on my ride since....2005'ish or so. How fast could pitting rust develop?

I'm still *guessing* some other rare structural defect in the spring. Maybe what Dudeman stated...

We'll know when the spring(s) gets back to Hyperco and they check them out.

I´m pretty sure it´s only surface rust. I live on a coastal area, very humid and salty, I try to take care of my car as best as I can, checking it now and then, looking for rust spots. My Hypercos have been on there for long, they were from the first group buy. I noticed the rust recently when I changed the AGXs with the CSK´s.

It certainly won't hurt to clean them up, hit them with Rust Cure (cures and leaves a primered surface) or something similar and a couple coats of Rustoleum. Hell, I did my battery tray recently in that exact fashion because it was ugly, cruddy, and had surface rust. Now it is rust-free, clean, and shiny black. I don't know if it will actually last longer, but it looks purty.

Real interested in what Hyperco finds out about the failure and their response.
