Transmission Gears (56k users are extinct, we should be OK)
Picked up a b13 se-r tranny today.

Because the seller bought it from an engine place and he didn't pull it himself or anything he doesn't have any other info on it other than he bought it to replace what he thought was a bad transmission on his nx.

His problem was fixed w/a new tranny mount so he never used this.

I picked this up today and cracked open the case as I was told thats the
ONLY way I can tell if its a good tranny or not. Here are some pics, please tell me what looks right and what looks wrong!

this gear looks kinda burned. is it OK like this? the gear oil in the tranny is kinda dark but no shavings or anything present. probably just didn't have the fluid flushed too often or at all.

are the gears suppose to be angled like that towards the ends of the gear? its like that on almost all the gears

what's the name of this seal and should i order a replacement?

does this washer go into the very top sensor?

how do i put this back? its an oil spreader

This is a piece or glass or something i found in the tranny :zoinks:

Any help appreciated! Will be crakin open another one tomorrow if time permits! :lick:

Difficult to tell with just the pictures. Seems fine to me though. Change all seals and flip the 5th gear syncro ring while you're at it.

what do you mean by flip the 5th gear synchro ring? just spin it to make sure its OK? if so i've done that many a time

I don't remember what's the other seal, but I think you can leave it.

There is a "ring gear", that goes up and down over the fith gear, this piece gets worn on the bottom part and is one of the 5th gear popout issue culprit.

You really should read this article:

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/transmission.htm

It will give you a MUCH better idea of what parts wear so you can know what to look for.
I'll answer any questions you have after you read that entire article.

Nope, it's no good, if you take a look at the bottom right corner of the 27th picture, the 4th gear spur diffuser isn't kicking back. You may as well toss it in the garbage.

BTW, when you opened up the tranny case, did it 'bark' at you or was it more of a whistling sound?

check the condition of the forks where they grab the arm for wear, when i had my 5th gear replaced the fork for 5th was toast
