I like the idea going back to the same area every year. I think it gives the event "roots". It also makes it easier to organize year after year. Things can be fine tuned and mistakes from previous years can be avoided. If you change the location every year, you end up with what we had this year, which almost didn't happen. While exploring different parts of the country is fun, I think it's a distraction from the purpose.
Hyperfest is a little too rice for this guy, sorry.

HH, I agree with you in some aspects, but we need to remember that while the cars and community bring us together, you don't want folks bored out of their minds if they decide they don't want to partake in one or two events. In addition, many folks are using their vacation days to justify the trip, and combining it with a location that folks will enjoy (not just on track) will make it more worth their while to attend. You need to find a happy medium or balance that keeps the convention alive. I'm still kicking myself that I didn't travel to Boston over the weekend during the free day. Sure, heading out to the track was fun, but I could have had equal fun by going to Boston.
I'm sure there were a few folks that used the CT trip as an excuse to visit with friends/family/tourist areas and not just for the convention (eggman, for example).
