If a mechanical odometer stops moving when it hits something-999, then it is a mechanical problem with the gauge not being able to turn over all those extra digits. What I've seen in the past is that the lubricant that is on the little plastic gears has gotten gummed up and is no longer acting as a lubricant. Sometimes giving it a whack will work to jar it loose, but the only real fix would be to disassemble to get at the gears, clean out the old lube that's there, and apply fresh.

...sometimes it can be made to work by jiggling the odo.trip button...but yea, what Jim said

Crap that sounds like a tough job. How hard is it to take apart?

Not sure on these. Last time I got down to that level was 30 years ago with a Honda. LOL Just take your time and don't lose any screws.

If there is a junk yard near you, pay the $2 admission fee (or whatever it is there), find a comparable model, and take that one apart first. Whenever I'm needing to fix something I've not done yet and I know I'm needing a part, I always figure out how to get it off first at the junk yard and have the spare part in hand before I take apart anything in the driveway. Worst case, you break something and start over on another junk car till you've got it down.

I got it working again! Took the cluster out of the dash and removed the plastic cover. Got out my Swiss Army knife and spun the numbers till it read 160000. Put it all back together and went for a drive, it now works.

Bah. Anytime I go to the trouble of taking the odometer apart, I move the numbers backwards not forwards.

Glad it's working though! But you may have this again in 9999 miles...
