Thread: Check Engine Light

Ok so my dad could help me with this but i would like some tips and things to help me out so i can learn a little bit myself.
Ok so the other day i go to crank my car. And it won't start... so i get it rolling dump it from 2nd gear and that doesn't work either. So i get a neighbor to jump it for me. and we jumped it and the fuse box started pouring smoke. so i jumped out and took the jumpers off. The next day my dad brings another battery over we cranked and drove it to my house. The gauge cluster and everything didn't work. So we rode up to the nissan dealer and bought the fuse we burnt up and now everything works except my horn and my lights flicker. Then my Check Engine Light came on... I'm not sure what the fuse was called i could go look, but I'm lazy... if i had to guess its a15 or has a 15 in it!
So with those symptoms could anyone just point me in the right direction of where to start

Diagnosed as P0136...O2 sensor.
Horn/Cruise Control is either a relay or clock spring, I'll have to diagnose that later.

did you figure how what burnt up after all the smoke started?

The 75a fuse or in this case just a piece of wire someone had stuck in that slot was what was smoking. I bought a 75a fuse from the dealership, popped that in and everything started working again except for the horn and cruise control.
I need to check the horn relay to see if that is the problem. It's possible that if the horn and cruise relay's are fine, the clock spring has gone bad?
Anyone have any experience with cruise control and horn not working in the past that might have some troubleshooting tips for me?

Your alternator may have seized up

Sounds like another fuse in the panel by your left side knee is blown.

I should have been more specific. When my son told me the car would not start I actually assumed it was the alternator after he described the symptoms to me. I pulled the alternator took it to Advanced Auto and had them check before buying another, the alternator checked out fine? So I re-installed.
Since this all happened last weekend I've left the battery from my project car in his and there hasn't been anymore issues. Very strange the way things happened.
Kyle, I checked the fuse panel inside the car and did not see horn listed? I'll check again this weekend, maybe pull every single fuse and inspect. I doubt it will be that simple a fix, but you never know.
It's also strange that now he's had these issues, he's getting a check engine light, P0136, rear o2 sensor. His first car is keeping me from working on my project car!
Right now the items to fix on his car are as follows.
-Headlights, for whatever reason they don't stay lit, if you tap on the headlight they come back on. I think I can fix this with new quality lights (it's currently got blue bulbs installed).
- Horn/Cruise Control, happened after the alternator/battery issue. Could be relays or clock spring. Where the hell can I get a clock spring for a reasonable price by the way?
-Rear o2 sensor. I really hope just replacing the sensor fixes the issue, been reading on here all sorts of hell with the P0136.

Horn/Cruise Control turned out to be the horn relay. Replaced the relay and all is working now.
