Thread: Gear oil GL-5

If it did not list GL-5 as an application, I would say use it, to be honest. But, it does. I would stay away from it.

get sta-lube at napa. It's the only gl4 I could find. It's really cheap and works great in temps above 40 degrees. It's thicker then the stock fluid. Myself and many others have used it before. Like $20 for a gallon of it.

the difference in shifting with redline MT-90 makes it MORE than worth it for the extra, what, $25?, IMO

if I am spending the money I'm gonna try the amsoil MTG. I actually do not like the feel of the redline MT-90. Too thin for me. Had same result in two different cars with the mt-90. I don't know if the MTG is any better but I want to give it a shot.

But if going cheap and in a pinch and need gl-4 locally, napa is only option I have found.

Ive tried a few oils here and there and nothing felt better than MT-90. Dont be cheap, get the right stuff.

I've used Pennzoil Syncromesh in both ga and sr powered cars i've had with no issues. Works good enough.

This is good to know! Wish I knew this when I had my 5spd p11. Right now I have an auto g20 and a 5spd Versa. When the Versa comes time to do the fluid I will def be getting in touch. I don't think nissan has a change interval on that. I might do it at 100k. I only have 57k now.

Go to autozone, you can get Coast GL-4 4 quart jug for about $15 or so. Personally I hated it, but I was using MT90 before hand thus I was spoiled.

Those are all other issues IMO. Synchromesh is clearly marked yellow metal safe which is the issue with GL-5. Synchromesh is not GL rated because it was designed to meet GM specs. GM 9985648 spec happens to be alot like GL-4. I used it 10 years ago in B15 and have a little mixed in on the miata right now to make a good blend.
